Welcome

My practice explores storytelling, proverbs, music, and shared human experience through tactile, materially driven forms that bridge sculpture and painting.

About

Bio

Carmen Van Velasquez is a multidisciplinary sculptor based in New York City, working across wood, stone, oil, and watercolor. Her practice draws from nature, history, and deeply introspective experiences, blending romantic and surrealist sensibilities.

She holds a BFA in Painting and Drawing with a concentration in Sculpture from Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, and is a member of The Art Students League of New York and the Mid-South Sculpture Alliance. Her work has been exhibited in galleries including the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art, and she has created commissioned pieces for clients both locally and internationally.

Her process is rooted in layering—both additive and subtractive—allowing materials to be built up, carved away, and transformed over time. She approaches each piece as a dialogue between internal experience and external influence, drawing from everything within her sphere, frequently writing down as much data as possible in her notebook and taking photographs and videos. Carmen resides in New York City with her husband and dog.
